Eastern Cape Teachers Strike Today
Previous Demonstration by SADTU Teachers in the Eastern Cape, South Africa are on strike today to further their demands for a change in the education administration The teachers are members of the South African Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU). They are demanding that 4000 temporary teachers who the education department sacked last year be reinstated. The teachers also want the removal of the education chief for the province, Modidima Mannya. The Eastern Cape division of SADTU accuses him of mismanaging education in the province. One local SADTU officer told the Dispatch: "We are sick and tired of this mess. We find ourselves having to cook food for children while files are piling up and pupils are waiting to be taught in class." Mannya is accused by teachers of 'recklessly' terminating school transport schemes and terminating all contracts in January because of lack of funding.
