English Teachers Fight Academy Proposals
Teachers demonstrating against academy proposals in Bolton
Members of the NAS/UWT and NUT unions on Bolton in the North of England are taking strike action against proposals to turn their schools into academies
Academies in England are schools which have been taken out of local democratic control and put in the hands of businesses, charitable trusts or religious groups - they are also allowed to change the pay and conditions of teachers.
Teachers in three schools - Withins, Top o Brow and the Hayward are all taking strike action to prevent their jobs being put in the hands of new employers and to fight against any changes to their pay and conditions. The local NUT branch has passed the following motion calling on teachers to express their solidarity:
This meeting congratulates all union members at The Hayward, Top o Brow and The Withins for their struggle to maintain their schools within the local , public education authority
We further give full support to union members striking at the imposition of a new employer under the academies programme.
We call upon our NEC to advertise widely the actions being undertaken in Bolton and call on Associations/
We further call upon our NEC to encourage other union groups to consider a similar route in opposing a change of employer where local authorty plans could indicate a detrimental affect on national salaries and conditions of service
