Greek Teachers Join Second General Strike This Month
Part of Thurssday’s Demonstration in Athens
Schools closed yesterday in Greece for the second time this month as teachers joined the general strike
Teachers joined other public sector workers including health workers, transport workers and firefighters and many workers in the private sector in a strike called jointly by the private sector union GSEE and the public sector ADEDY. The teachers are protesting against the budget cuts being instituted by the social democratic government which have seen wages cut, jobs lost, pensions frozen and taxes go up.
Many young people joined the protest and in parts of Athens there were battles with the police. The march in Athens was the biggest since the troubles began according to the BBC’s reporter Malcolm Brabant. He said that the anger on the streets was ditrected towards the rich who are perceived to have caused the crisis by reckless financial dealing, corruption and tax avoidance and yet it is the poor and the working people who are being asked to pay the price.
