Young People demonstrating in Greece this Month
Greek teachers took part in a general strike this month against government cutbacks
Further strikes are planned for January as the government's austerity measures - driven by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the European Union (EU) continue to hit the poorest hardest. The measures have included slashing the minimum wage and massive cut backs in public spending including of course in education.
Nearly 20% of Greek citizens live below the poverty line - yet the government of the ruling PASOK party came to power pledging that it would not make any more cuts and would protect the poor. The anger felt by many people in Greece - including teachers and parents - is reflected in the massive demonstrations taking place across the country which are being met by increasing brutality by the state.
