Teachers Blocking a Road in Guatemala

Teachers in Guatemala in Central America  are on strike to try to secure a 16% pay rise

Teachers have blocked  roads from Guatemala to Mexico, El Salvador and Belize causing huge disruption to the tourist trade.

Half the population of Guatemala lives below the poverty line with 15% in extreme poverty and it has one of the highest malnutrition rates in the world. Meanwhile in the small neighbouring country of Belize teachers are also considering strike action. Their anger at the failure of the government to pay them properly has been exacerbated by a statement by Minister of Education Patrick Faber who said “…60% of Belizean educators are untrained and ignorant.”.
