A strike of teachers in India last week affected 40,000 schools. The teachers are all members of unions affiliated to the Joint Action Committee of Teachers’ Organisations (JACTO)

The teachers were on strike in the province of Andhra Pradesh for 13 days before talks between JACTO and the government resulted in 10 of the 12 demands of the teachers being met. The government also agreed to count the strike days as special leave. However there was still some disagreement between the leaders of the 22 unions which are affilliated to JACTO.
