Irish Student Teachers protest Salary Cut
Irish student teachers have joined their newly qualified colleagues to protest against pay cuts Newly qualified teachers will now earn 30% less than they would have done 18 months ago. The demonstrators say that this will create segregation in staffrooms and carried banners calling for equal pay for equal work. Like other states in the European Union which have faced huge debts to international bankers and bond traders, the Irish government chose to cut public spending - in particular education - as a way of getting out of the crisis. Now young teachers are expected to pay through a massive cut in their salaries. The Irish teaching unions are supporting the students. More details of the situation can be found on the ASTI website.
