Kenyan Teachers to Strike
A Classroom in Kenya
Members of the Kenyan National Union of Teachers are to go on strike on January 19th in pursuit of their pay claim.
The KNUT which has 250,000 members issued the strike notice last week as a result of the breakdown of negotiations with the government and is receiving widespread support in the union. KNUT’s leaders say that the government has reneged on its promise for an immediate uplift of 35% in the pay of the lowest paid teachers who at present earn about $130 a month while the highest paid education officials get ten times that amount.
