Leaders of Turkish Teaching Union arrested
Leaders of Egitim Sen, the Turkish teachers' union and of other public sector unions have been arrested by security forces We have just received the following very concerning statement from Egitim Sen: Urgent: Egitim Sen and KESK head office is being searched by the police. 71 people under custody including executive board members of Egitim Sen and KESK. Today (26.6.2012) KESK's (Confederation of Public Employees) affiliate trades unions' members were taken into custody early in the morning after police raids to their houses. The police raids and custodies were for the operation targeting KCK (defined as part of an illegal terrorist operation.) According to recent information there are 71 people taken into custody and whose houses have been searched by the police including, including KESK President Lami Ozgen, Egitim Sen General Secretary Mehmet Bozgeyik, General Secretary of SES (Health union) Mejmet Siddik Skin, Generals Secretary of Tum Bel Sen (local government union) Izzet Alpergin and President of Tarim Orkam Sen (agricultural workers' union) Metin Vuranok, as well as President of the Dyanet and Foundation Workers UNion Cengiz Payci. Also many members and branch executives of Egitim Sen as well as other unions are in custody. The operation covered 20 cities. 3 executive board members of Egitim Sen have been taken into custody, the GS, the Women's Secretary Esan Yilmaz, and Abdullah Karahan - secretary of financial affairs have been taken into custocy by police, their offices in the head office building in Ankara have been searched by the police since the early morning. Some of their belongings were seized by the police. Police also tried to seize and search other documents at the union which have no connection with the detained people.
