Macedonian Teachers Strike

Members of the union which covers state school teachers and cultural workers, went on strike from Monday this week

30,000 members of the union (SONK) started their open-ended strike on Monday after their leaders were unable to get any movement from their government on their pay claim. Teachers in Macedonia earn $385 a month. The government says that it cannot increase teachers’ salaries until 2010 because of the world economic crisis.
