New Zealand Teachers Take to the Streets
New Zealand Teachers Demonstrate
Secondary teachers in New Zealand took to the streets last Wednesday in support of their strike for more money for education
1500 teachers marched on the parliament building in Wellington and 2000 demonstrated in Aukland. As well as demonstrating, teachers held cake stalls, picketed, played music and dressed up as wizards, witches and daleks. They had tremendous support from the public including doctors and radiographers who are also in negotiations with the government.
In another development the unions called on money the authorities saved by the strike to be paid to the fund to help people in the Canterbury area of New Zealand who were hit by an earthquake earlier this month.
