Nigerian Teachers to Strike

The Nigerian teachers union (NUT) is due to stage a three day strike starting this Friday unless their demands are met
The government has failed to implement the new salary structure for teachers in Nigeria, whose present salaries are less than £50 per month. A spokesperson from the union said that there was no chance of the Millenium Development Goals being met in Nigeria unless teachers were properly remunerated.
The NUT has got the support of the National Labour Congress (NLC) and civil society groups involved with education such as Action Aid Nigeria.
The union stated that all secondary and primary schools would be closed from Friday and called on the National Examinations Council to reschedule the exams which are due to take place at that time.
