Ohio Teachers on strike in 2006

Teachers in the Newton Falls school district in Ohio are to go on strike in pursuit of a wage agreement which will preserve their living standards

Scott Kernan - the chief negotiator for the teachers said that teachers had fallen 5.3% below inflation in the last five years. The district is not prepared to raise the teachers’ salaries at all. Kerenan said that his survey in the Mahoning Valley shows that pay for teachers in the Newton Falls area is the lowest.

The local education officials are intending to keep the schools open by using security staff and substitute teachers. The security staff will also be videoing the picket lines.
