Orissa Teachers Strike against low Pay

Block Grant Teachers protest in Sambalpur

Secondary teachers in the Indian state of Orissa are on strike to demand that the government honours its promises

The teachers who work in so-called block grant schools are demanding that the government reverts to the system where they pay 100% of the expenses for the school in grant-in-aid. This the government had promised to do – but has subsequently gone back on its promise. While teachers in government  secondary schools receive a meagre salary of about $340, teachers in block grant schools only receive a third of that amount. Not only that but they have no pension of any kind.

As well as closing nearly 2000 high schools the teachers have burned uniforms, locked up district inspectors’ offices and are calling a hunger strike for August 17th. Union leaders are threatening the government that if they do not accede to their demands they will turn their struggle into a people’s struggle -as parents too are angry about the low funding for their children’s education.
