Palestinian Child Prisoners on Hunger Strike
A Child arrested by Israeli Soldiers
20 Palestinian children detained in Hasharon Prison in Israel have started a hunger strike
The children are taking the action in protest against the harsh conditions in which they are held, including the use of solitary confinement. Defence of the Child International (DCI) launched an urgent action appeal in January of this year to end this practice. There are 190 prisoners under the age of 18 in Israeli jails. The UK National Union of Teachers took a resolution to last year's congress of Education International condemning this practice and the mistreatment of Palestinian children in Israeli jails. The practice is also condemned by the Israeli rights group B'Tselem.
Last month, settlers attacked a school near Nablus and in the ensuing conflict, children were injured by Israeli soldiers firing rubber bullets and tear gas.To read more about the experiences of Palestinian children in the Occupied Territories go to: http://www.dci-pal.org/
