Panama Teachers Threaten Strike in New Year
Panamian Teachers Demonstrating
Teachers' unions in Panama are threatening to go on strike in the new year against the government's neo-liberal education policies
Teachers were under sustained attack by government forces in the summer for campaigning for much needed repairs to school buildings (see previous post). These problems have not been resolved - teachers are demanding improvement in school infrastructure, consideration of the problems faced by teachers in areas which are hard to get to and improvements in teacher training.
The union says that the government is attacking the state education system as a smokescreen for introducing neo-liberal policies. The government is introducing a new curriculum without any kind of scientific assessment of the educational situation in Panama - which the union characterises as anti democratic. If the union does not get any movement by the government it will call out its members on strike in the new year.
