Panama Teachers to Strike

Teachers in remote areas of Panama are going on strike tomorrow in protest at the government’s failure to improve the conditions in their schools

The dispute is a continuation of last year’s protests when teachers, parents and supporters were violently suppressed by the police when they were campaigning against unsafe conditions in schools.  (See previous posts)

Earlier this month teachers were on strike in Panama against a new law which restricts the rights of workers to go on strike and to organise, and allows bulding projects to go ahead without proper environmental assessment. Panama is one of the richest countries in Latin Amreica and yet it is the second most unequal.
