Teachers’ union leaders in Romania have threatened to call strike action if a promised pay rise for teachers of 50% is not delivered

Thousands of teachers marched through the streets of Bucharest last week to protest about the government’s action in blocking an opposition move – signed into law by the president – to raise teachers’ salaries by 50%. At present the average teacher’s salary in Romania is approximately $485 per month. The economy in Romania had been booming and public servants were long overdue a pay rise. The opposition party is threatening a vote of no confidence in the government if it continues to block the salary increase.
