South African teachers are gearing up for a strike which is scheduled to start on August 10th

After a breakdown of talks with the government the South African Democratic Teachers’ Union (SADTU) national executive committee has voted to ballot for strike action in support of its claim for increased pay and housing allowances. The union’s campaign will be in concert with other public sector workers who are also campaigning for a pay claim.

The teachers also have the support of students. Their spokesperson Lazola Ndamase told the website eyewitnessnews:

“We believe the working class should exercise whatever inch of power it has to get as much as possible, because what they’re earning at the moment is [nonsense].”
