24 school students in Istanbul were expelled after they struck in support of workers at the Tekel tobacco firm

Tekel was once a state owned firm and there have been a series of bitter disputes against privatisation. In 2009 after it was finally bought by the British firm BAT, 12 factories were shut down - workers suffered huge pay cuts and many lost their jobs.The students organised a sit in protest at the garden of the school in which 200 took part. When asked to return to class all but 24 did. These 24 have been expelled from their school.
