Parents wait for news outside the flattened Juyuan middle school
In the second disaster to hit Asia in the last few days, schools were among the many buildings destroyed when a powerful earthquake hit South Western China on Monday
50 bodies have already been pulled from one school where over 900 pupils and their teachers were when the earthquake hit. The earthquake hit the province of Sichuan and it was very difficult for rescue teams to get to the epicentre in Wenchuan because road and rail links had been destroyed.
People were reported to have been buried in two chemical plants in the province and 5 other schools were reported to have been destroyed. At the epicentre up to 80% of the buildings are said to have been destroyed.
The Chinese authorities are appealing for help with medical supplies, tents and food.
