Somali Teachers and Students Suffer Attacks

Education International has called on the Somali government to guarantee the safety of teachers and students
In parts of the country including the capital most schools are closed and some are being used as army bases. Meanwhile students, school administrators and teachers have been violently attacked and some killed. Schools have been singled out for violence by both government and Ethiopian forces. Teachers and students staged a strike in September to protest against the violence.
Somalia is a country in turmoil yet communities are doing their best to keep education going with some teachers working voluntarily in order to ensure some children at least get an education. Education International has issued its appeal to the government on behalf of the Somalia Nantional Union of Teachers. Read more at www.ei-ie.org
