According to a new report from SADTU the South African teachers’ union, ten teachers are dying every month from AIDS

SADTU has been conducting a study of teacher deaths since August 2007 and has reported that half the fatalities were caused by AIDS. Teachers aged 30 to 39 are most at risk.

The union is launching a programme to educate teachers about the pandemic. A spokesperson said that the fact that the most educated people were being killed by the disease made the challenges to educators that much greater.
