A solid strike by Tanzanian  teachers was called off by the union leadership last week after a court ruled the strike illegal

The strike was ruled illegal despite 95.7% of the membership voting in favour according to press reports. The teachers were threatened with the sack by the government, which has now used the courts to end the strike. As in many parts of the Global South, teachers in Tanzania are struggling to make ends meet, while at the same time being expected to educate children under almost impossible conditions.
