Teachers' Leaders Arrested in Iran
Iranian Teachers in an Earlier Protest
11 members of the central council of the Iranian Teachers Union were arrested in Teheran at the beginning of January
The teachers' leaders had been staging a peaceful protest outside the Iranian parliament to press their demands for salary increases and for the protection of their human rights. The government refused to negotiate with them but instead arrested 11 of the 20 council members. After protests and a threatened mass walk out of teachers, the detainees were released after three days.
