University Teachers in Northern India Take Action

 Teachers Demonstrating in Amritsar

University and college teachers in the north Indian states of Punjab and Haryana are taking action to secure pay which has been owed to them since January

Teachers in the area are refusing extra duties, staging work stoppages, hunger strikes and demonstrations until the government pays them the new pay scale which has been promised to them since January of this year. Even though central government has provided 80% of the funding for the new pay scales the local state governments have still failed to implement them. Moreover despite previous promises they have not implemented a new grading structure with the result that many teachers will be worse off.

I would be very grateful for any first hand reports from India on teachers’ struggles there. Please email me at mary@teachersolidarity.com
